Our Spelling Curriculum

Spelling in the EYFS

Spelling in EYFS is largely oral playing with the blending and segmenting of words leading into writing words according to the sounds that pupils can identify. Correct spelling of the 45 key reception High frequency words is encouraged for children who are developmentally ready

The emphasis in EYFS is largely on being able to hear the sounds in words and then write the corresponding letter shapes correctly.

Spelling in KS1 and 2

The national curriculum 2014 lists sets of spellings and spelling patterns which pupils should know by the end of each stage and these lists are used to guide planning across the school.

Pupils learn their spelling during discrete spelling sessions where they choose froma selection of 'Word Study' activities.

Pupils in Year 1 will learn spellings linked to their phonics stage within the Letters and Sounds programme. Every pupil in Years 2 to 6 has a  spelling journal containing word lists that match the Curriculum 14 objectives. Once the age appropriate objectives have been mastered, pupils will then be given journals containing lists of words from the Word Lists within the Curriculum 14 document.
