Pupil Leadership
At Booker Hill, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. We firmly believe in identifying talents within our community and this includes providing opportunities for talented pupils to thrive and to develop leadership skills. Through developing pupil leadership, we are providing pupils with a greater understanding of British Values: Democracy, Mutual Respect and Individual Liberty
We have lots of opportunities for groups of pupils to take on leadership roles in all different areas of school life.
House and Vice Captains
House Captains and Vice captains are elected in September of each academic year. Elections are held for each house with all pupils in the school having the opportunity to view presentations by candidates and then vote for who they think are the best pupils to represent their houses. See our House Captains' page for more information about the houses they represent.
Pupil Parliament
Our Pupil Parliament are a group of 14 pupils elected by their peers to represent them as class representatives. The Parliament members meet each week to discuss ways to improve our school and they hold class meetings to gather the opinions and ideas of all pupils. Meetings are also held with senior leaders and Governors so that the children's ideas are shared and listened to by all of the adults in the school. The members also carry out learning walks, pupil surveys, present assemblies and last year they even gave a presentation to the Governors at a Full Governing body meeting. In addition to running the school stationery shop, the Pupil Parliament have an active role in raising awareness of local and wider issues including last year's plastic pollution project and this year's drive to reduce Booker Hill's environmental footprint. See our Pupil Parliament page for more information about he work they do.
Librarians
Our school library is open to all classes and is run by class librarians. This groups of enthusiastic readers guide their peers when using the school library in selecting books and they are also all going to be trained in using the computerised book allocation system so that they can check books in and out and keep our library organised.
The librarians also help to keep the class libraries tidy and will carry out surveys in their classes to select new books for both class and the main library. Soon, we will be asking the librarians to help us to create new library displays too.
This group are led by Miss White and Mrs Charles.
Literacy Leaders
As part of our drive to provide enrichment opportunities for enthusiastic Readers and Writers, a group of Year 6 pupils have been chosen to act as Literacy Leaders with the first part of the new role to be to support some younger pupils with their reading. The year 6 pupils have been trained in book introductions by our specialist reading teacher and they are already thoroughly enjoying their role. The pupils meet with their younger reading partner each morning before lessons and they spend time in the school library reading with them and sharing their love of everything book related. Click here to see photographs of our Literacy Leaders in action and to hear what they have been saying about their role so far.
Sports Leaders
Previously, we introduced Sports Leaders at Booker Hill. Two Year 6 pupils with a talent for sport spent time coaching younger pupils in a variety of sports. This initiative was very success in providing the pupils with coaching and leadership skills. Every year, 2 pupils from each class are selected by teachers based on their interest and sporting talent. The pupils will be trained to coach other pupils during break and lunchtimes as well as being involved in helping to organise sporting events across the school.
Anti Bullying Ambassadors
One of our newest groups of pupils leaders are the Anti Bullying Ambassadors. This group of children will be the eyes and ears on the playground to make sure that bullying does not happen at Booker Hill.
Soon, they will also be working with Mr Bowden to update our anti bullying leaflets for children and for parents and they will also be involved in helping to plan activities during anti bullying week in November. This group are led by Mr Bowden.
Language Leaders
Language Leaders have a very important role in school life in Key Stage 2. This group of pupils have been selected as children who have shown an enthusiasm and skill for learning French during their lessons with Mrs Harwood.
Language leaders are tasked with driving the use of French in their classrooms including using French dates and timetables on a daily basis.
Mrs Harwood has lots of other ideas for the language leaders including them helping to organise Languages Day in the summer term so the group will be a valuable and proactive pupil leader group throughout the year.
Play Leaders
The Play Leader role is another one of the newest pupil leadership roles at Booker Hill. Soon this group of children will meet with Mr Bowden to discuss ways to improve play times for all children.
We have lots of ideas for our play leaders but we want to draw on their ideas to come up with a variety of playground games that they can teach other children to keep them busy and happy during their much needed breaks both on the playground and inside during wet playtimes. This group are led by Mr Bowden.
Science Leaders
Here we welcome this year’s Science Leaders. This group of enthusiastic scientists have been selected for their love of science and the world around them. The leaders have so far been tasked with organising a ‘Question of the Week’ in their classrooms and with helping their teachers to set up and run practical experiments as part of the science curriculum.
Some of the Science Leaders already attend an after school science club and we are exploring further enrichment activities for this group and hope to offer some STEM / extra curricular opportunities for them all this academic year. This group are led by Miss Tulloch.
