Key Principles for Assessment

At Booker Hill, assessment is fundamental to all aspects of our practice.  All members of staff are regularly trained in our approach to assessment. We have a senior leader who is responsible for assessment.

We record progress of content and skill development of the pupils via Target Tracker. The record enables the school to provide meaningful and understandable information for pupils, parents, teachers, school leaders, governors, government and agents of government.

Assessment is divided into the following three areas:

  1. Providing reliable information about children’s progress
  • Assessments draw on a wide range of evidence to provide a complete picture of pupil achievement. We ensure that pupils of differing abilities and who are falling behind are identified and supported. In addition, we identify pupils who are excelling and implement measures to support their development.
  • Teachers use the outcomes of our assessment to summarise and analyse attainment and progress for their pupils and classes.
  • We create meaningful tracking of pupil progress towards end of year / end of Key Stage expectations and feedback to parents through parents’ evenings, interim and annual reports. Parents and pupils receive a detailed report of what has been achieved and indications of what they need to do next.
  • Assessments are balanced judgements that are free from bias and are based on quantifiable evidence. Moderation in school makes sure our assessments are fair, reliable and valid.

2.    Helping to drive improvements for pupils and teachers

  • Assessment is closely linked to improving the quality of teaching. We use the outcomes of assessment to check and support our teaching standards and help us improve.
  • Assessment objectives set high expectations for learners, providing a pathway of progress and development for every child.
  • Assessment is explicitly linked to feedback to pupils that contributes to improved learning and has clear, concrete objectives. Assessment feedback will inspire greater effort and a belief that, through hard work and practice, more can be achieved.
  • To produce recordable measures that can demonstrate comparison against expected standards and reflect progress over time.
  • We celebrate all achievements across a broad and balanced curriculum. This includes sport, art, performance, behavior and social and emotional development.

3.     Making sure the school is keeping up with external best practice and innovation

  • The assessment principles of the school are created using local networks linked to statutory guidance to develop clear, transparent information about attainment and progress for all stakeholders.
