Autumn Term 2022
Our Autumn Term topic is…
'The Romans'
The main focus for this topic is History but it will link to several other subjects, including: Art, DT & Geography.
In Science this term, we have two topics:
Animals Including Humans and States of Matter.
We will be learning all about the digestive system in humans and animals. Children will learn more about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores in the context of teeth, digestion and the food chain. In addition, we will extend our understanding of food chains to more complex chains and food webs.
English
The curriculum for English places emphasis on spelling, handwriting and grammar skills. This will be reflected in lessons with pupils practising a cursive handwriting style and having weekly spellings that include similar spelling patterns. Pupils will be given time in school to practise their handwriting and to complete Word Study activities to help them learn their new spellings. They will not be formally tested on them as research has shown this to be an ineffective way of improving spelling for many pupils. Please encourage your child to learn their spellings and practise their handwriting. In English lessons, we will be developing our writing of both fiction and non-fiction. This term we will be having whole class reading comprehension sessions where pupils will be given a range of visual and written texts and will give written responses to questions based on them. Please encourage your child to read and complete reading journal activities at home as this will help to develop their understanding of texts and authors’ use of language.
Maths
In Maths in the Autumn term, we will cover place value and the four operations including developing our ability to apply mixed operations in different contexts
Art
In Art, we will be making Roamn Mosaics, use clay to make a reproduction of an ancient Roman artefact and paint a scene from a Roman myth.
Computing
Computing Systems & Networks—The Internet
RE
Our RE lessons will focus on:
Christmas Journeys.
Homework - return day is Monday
Homework will be set on a Tuesday and returned on the following Monday.
Feedback from parents/carers indicates that they would like some consistency in the way homework is set. Therefore, we have designed a combined approach that enables teachers to set specific, individual tasks alongside an approach that supports independence, autonomy and pupil self-reflection.
Task 1 - all children are expected to read on a daily basis
Task 2 - class teachers will set homework tasks based on formative assessment and topics being studied. Tasks range from learning times tables; specific tasks linked to maths, humanities, and science topics: reading comprehension activites; grammar based tasks, French activities and research topics.
Task 3 - all children must complete at least one online homework activity and post their work or a screenshot onto their Seesaw journal (task set on Seesaw, Times Tables Rockstars, Coding, research, French etc)
Task 4 - as part of our whole school ethos pf growth mindset, Booker Hill offers pupils additional and unique approach to home learning. The approach takes the form of set tasks that pupils choose from and complete over the course of a half term / term.
Information
All pupils are expected to bring a water bottle, a waterproof coat, writing equipment, a school bag and plimsoles / trainers to school every day.
PE is on a Monday (swimming) and a Thursday.
