Year 1

Autumn Leaflet

 Summer Leaflet

Year 1 have had a very exciting Spring term learning all about our Topic: Travel and Transport. In English, we have learned the story Mr Gumpy's Outing by John Burningham. After acting out the original story, for the first time in Year 1, we created our very own text maps and were able to read them to retell and then write our own versions of this popular book.

In Maths, we have been refining our counting skills to include much bigger numbers and have even managed to count to 100 and beyond! We really enjoy using counters, tens frames and other equipment to help us. On Maths Day, we explored the properties of shape: we made rockets using 3D shapes; worked in teams to create tangrams and designed and made shape pictures.

Our topic work has included us exploring different modes of transport and we have created artwork using a variety of mediums and techniques including paint and collage. We have really enjoyed using papier mache to make hot air balloons too! In DT, we designed and then made our own buses with working axles and wheels; this linked to our science topic of properties of materials because we had to choose the right materials for different parts of the bus.

We combined our Maths skills and Science knowledge to use sorting diagrams to classify objects by the material used to construct them.

Science Day also gave us the chance to spend some time exploring what affects the speed at which ice melts. We enjoyed taking our cups of ice to different places and then watching how quickly the ice turned into water.

Autumn 2018

Superheroes

Superheroes is our topic for Autumn Term.

Our history, geography and art lessons will have a Superhero theme to them including finding out about real life superheroes such as explorers and doctors.

Sylvia Earle                                        Roald Amundsen                         Edward Jenner

English

In our English lessons, we have been reading the story of Superkid.

Superkid is just a normal looking child, but in secret he is Superkid who helps the other children with problems ranging from bullies to broccoli, tidying bedrooms to being made to walk the plank by pirates.

We have read the story many times, created a text map and thought about our favourite part before writing our own problems for Superkid to come flying in and save the day.

Here we are acting out parts of the story:

We have also read Harvey Slumfenburger's Christmas Present. It is a story that follows Father Christmas delivering his last present to Harvey Slumfenburger, who lives in a hut at the top of Roly Poly Mountain, which is far, far away. Unfortunately, one of the reindeer is not feeling well so Father Christmas has to get help from others.

Maths

In our Maths lessons, we have focussed on number: place value and addition. We have been counting forwards and backwards all the way to 100. We are learning the number one more and one less than a given number, how to add two small numbers together and the pairs of numbers that make ten.

We really enjoy using equipment to help us with our learning

Here we are using Numicon to compare number bonds

Building on our Number, place value and addition work, we have also been subtracting and learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Here we are having fun with some shapes and the paint.

Science

In Science lessons, our topic is Animals including Humans. We have kicked off our learning by having great fun labelling parts of the body and learning about the five senses.

In Science, we have continued our topic Animals including Humans. We have been classifying animals into groups: mammals, reptiles, fish or birds. We have also learnt about what different animals eat and whether they are carnivores, omnivores or herbivores.

Merry Christmas!

Autumn term always sees the excitement as we build towards Christmas, beginning with our Nativity. This year  we performed "Christmas with the Aliens" with Year 2 and Reception classes. We decorated the classroom with Christmas decorations, wore our Christmas Jumpers to school to raise money for Save the Children, had a Christmas Party and met Father Christmas.
